Garden Contemplation

Garden Paths

Walking through a garden is a cleansing experience that allows me to leave the world behind. My pace and breathing slow as I become one with the natural world. I often go to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona, enjoying its transformation throughout the year. Each time I walk a garden path, I discover something new.

Birds

One of the things that I love is the sound of birds singing. I don’t know many names of birds, but I enjoy watching them. I’ve learned to walk quietly and slowly so I don’t scare them away. Watching them is a joy as they feast on the plants, call to each other, and make nests. My favorite bird to see is a hummingbird. When one appears, I always feel like the universe says, “I love you.”

Butterflies and Bees

Bees and butterflies are great teachers of patience. I must be still and quiet to photograph them, respecting their space. A telephoto lens helps to capture their beautiful details. Fall and spring are the best times to see butterflies during migration.

Flowers

Each flower at Desert Botanical Garden has its season when it puts on a show before fading away. In the spring, the cactus flowers show off their magnificent blooms. I always feel so lucky to be in the garden on the right day as they tend to flower for the day, then fade away until next year. Wildflowers and sunflowers have a longer life, but they have a unique beauty even when dying.

Gardens help me feel centered, where I can find peace. They remind me that all things are temporary, and there is beauty to be found in all things when I take the time to slow down and enjoy life.
