One of the things that I knew would be important in dealing with the stress of grief was exercise. I also knew that it would have to be something I could do year-round since Phoenix summers are too hot for me to exercise outside. I decided an exercise bike would be a good choice, but I didn’t want to pay for the shipping. Thus, I became an Amazon Prime member.
Fortunately, I’m handy with tools, and it wasn’t hard to put the bike together. I began using it immediately, sometimes riding up to 60 minutes daily. It was both good for my physical and emotional health. I was pretty consistent using it in the beginning. Over time, it became a supplement as I would go hiking or for walks instead.
On May 27, 2020, I developed vestibular neuritis, which affects balance. Once I got over the acute phase, I would try to walk around the neighborhood, but that could be challenging. Also, I couldn’t get my heart rate to a level to make it an efficient way to exercise. Thankfully, my exercise bike was still in excellent working order. I could use that because it was stable, and if I needed to stop, I was already home.
My insurance company began offering a fitness app with a coach that you met with remotely. That motivated me to become more consistent with my exercise and eating routines. I look forward to getting on the bike when I finish my breakfast. It still helps to relieve stress but also makes me feel good.
